Situation Report

Two powerful earthquakes of 7.7 and 6.4 magnitude struck Myanmar on March 28, 2025, at approximately 12:50 PM local time, with its epicentre located just 16 kilometres northwest of Sagaing. The quake occurred at a shallow depth of just 10 kilometres, making it particularly destructive.

Myanmar is highly vulnerable to seismic events due to its location along the Sagaing Fault. This fault line, running approximately 1,200 kilometres through the centre of the country, has a long history of significant earthquakes, many of which have caused widespread damage and loss of life. Notable historical earthquakes along the fault include the devastating 1839 Ava earthquake and recently, 2012 Shwebo earthquake.
